Scottish Rugby Women & Girls Strategy Leaves Ireland Behind

Earlier today Scottish Rugby published its Women & Girls’ Strategy 2022-2026. The organisation hopes to use this strategy to grow the participation, representation and visibility of the women’s game on and off the pitch.

The strategy is centred around “The Four P’s:” Participation, Pathway, Pipeline and Performance. These P’s are intertwined in a way that they hope will stimulate long-term growth and sustainability.

Within this plan, Scottish Rugby intends to invest in seven priority areas to make an impact across the four P’s mentioned. These areas are; ‘Empowering leadership’, ‘Positive introduction to rugby’, ‘Playing pathway for all’, ‘Building capacity in our clubs’, ‘Developing the future of performance rugby’, ‘A winning Scotland’ and ‘Let them see what they can be’.

In 2021, the organisation invested £1.6m into the women and girls’ game, and with the implementation of this new strategy, the Scottish Rugby Board agreed to additional investments up to £2.5m.

An additional part of the investment emphasises the course to professionalising the women’s game. This part will entail the organisation to committing to a minimum of 30 contracted rugby players.

Scottish Rugby’s plan to shift towards professionalism leaves Ireland as the only Women’s Six Nations team without full time contracts in place with their players.
