Often times we are torn between trying to be healthy and enjoying a tasty snack – but the market has changed! As consumers we have been attempting to distance ourselves from the bag of Tayto crisps or Dairy Milk chocolate bars, in search of new, healthier snacks. The emphasis on a healthy lifestyle has introduced a new market of healthy snacks.
We’ve been testing the Nakd bars, interested in the use of 100% natural ingredients and their flexibility to cater to a wide market – they are wheat, dairy and gluten free! An enjoyable snack and you no longer need to worry about what snacks to offer your coeliac, vegan or lactose intolerant teammates, knowing you don’t have to worry about specific dietary needs – although please don’t offer them to friends with nut allergies! A smaller option than some competitors, the snack is filling and doesn’t leave you looking for more.
In Irish shops and supermarkets, the options that we have easily found are the Cocoa Orange. Berry Delight, Cashew Cookie, Bakewell Tart, Lemon Drizzle, Rhubarb & Custard, Carrot Cake and Cocoa Delight. Bars can be bought individually and in multipack (4 bars) in both Tesco and Supervalu – watch out for offers as they can be bought for as low as 61c a piece!
A Her Sport favourite is the Bakewell Tart, which genuinely tastes like a bakewell tart!! The Nakd Bakewell Tart bar is quite sweet but there are plenty of alternatives. The full range of products can be found on the Natural Balance Foods website with the option to buy boxes of 18 bars for £13.99. The Cocoa Orange bar is tasty, those who like dark chocolate will be interested in trying this out.
To give an idea of the nutritional values we have chosen these two bars to take a closer look.

The nutritional labels above show that Nakd bars are a great alternative to satisfy your sweet-tooth. Being under 150 calories Nakd bars are guilt free and a perfect snack substitute for unhealthy processed chocolate bars.
Due to the cashew nuts used in these Nakd bars, they contain healthy fats (monounsaturated) which are known for decreasing the risk of breast cancer, reducing cholesterol levels as well as lowering the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat content does not amount to much of the total fat in the bars.
The dates used in the ingredients of the bars means that there are high levels of natural sugars which will provide you with a natural source of energy. This will also satisfy your sweet-tooth. Studies have also shown that dates are a low-glycemic index food and won’t spike blood sugar levels immediately.
